Characteristics of online market research

A brief historical overview

Online market research in Hungary started as a practical method in 1999 and nowadays it has become a fully-fledged 'mainstream' research method. While Internet penetration was below 50% in Hungary, it was difficult to argue with the reliability of the method. The year of change was 2008, when domestic Internet access increased to 55% among the population. Indeed, the domestic history of the online method can be calculated from this point, although it is true that besides such penetration there were still target groups that could not be reached only partially through the Internet, so caution was not unreasonable in these times. The real turnaround, the real breakthrough was in 2013, when Internet penetration has risen above 70% and most of the target groups have actually become available online. The situation has improved even more since internet penetration is currently 75% in the whole population in Hungary (source: KSH, 2018) and over 90-95% at younger, wealthier, more educated consumers, so we can practically reach almost all target groups, like with other non-online methods (except for those over 60, where penetration is only 41%; this does not mean that they cannot be reached online, just to take into account that less than half of them are accessible via the Internet).

The method has thus become reliable in the scientific and academic sense nowadays, and the results of a purely online research are as accurate and reliable as any other research method would have done.

The benefits of online market research

How is it going?

In online questionnaire surveys, respondents are asked to respond by e-mail. By clicking on the link in the email, they respond to the questions of the questionnaire on a website.

The online panel

The online panel is a database in which the research company records personal data, socio-demographic characteristics, or some consumption habits of the people who voluntarily registered in the panel. Panel members participate in motivational gift lottery at certain intervals (e.g. quarterly). There are basically two types of panels, the DM panel and the research panel. The DM panel continuously bombes its members with advertisements, so it can be used for research purposes, but it is less suitable! However, only the market research is conducted in the controlled research panel, neither advertising nor any other sales activity is allowed, so it can be considered more reliable and credible.

Our company uses only a research panel for online market research, which features are:

  • tens of thousands of volunteered active panel members
  • the panel is checked and maintained continuously
  • can only be used for market research purposes
  • due to its size and composition it is suitable for establishing a representative sample
  • it can be divided into target groups (by demographic characteristics, ESOMAR status)

Timing, results

Field work: 1-3 weeks, results: 1 week. Final results for up to 3-4 weeks! The results are provided in electronic form, with graphs, tables (in Word and PDF format), in Hungarian.

The results include basic statistics per question and advanced statistics by demographic characteristics (the latter  in tabular form). Upon request, we present the results in a personal presentation (at the Client's headquarters).

Pricing

Indicative prices for online consumer market research 2020 (in case of average target group and average research topic):

Up to 5 minutes questionnaire (about 10-12 questions):
On a sample of 500 people: 690,000 HUF + VAT
On a sample of 1,000 people: 790,000 HUF + VAT

Up to 10 minutes questionnaire (about 20-24 questions):
On a sample of 500 people: 890,000 HUF + VAT
On a sample of 1,000 people: 1,090,000 HUF + VAT

Up to 15-20 minutes questionnaire (35-40 questions):
On a sample of 500 people: 1,190,000 HUF + VAT
On a sample of 1,000 people: 1,390,000 HUF + VAT


These above are indicative prices, a unique calculation is made for each research, please specify the following in your request:

  • Sample size - how many people should we ask?
  • Who is the target group to ask, what screening questions do we filter out the respondents? The final price is influenced (in addition to the size of the sample and the length of the questionnaire) by the expected penetration of the target population to be screened with filter questions. The more people we need to ask to get the target number of answers, the higher the price will be. Example: if you can only ask women aged 28-45 in Budapest who have higher than average income and regularly consume a particular product, it will cost much more than asking people aged 18 to 59 nationwide!
  • If you already have the questionnaire, please attach it to the offer request if you do not already have one, please specify how much time it will take to fill approx. (in minutes) (it should be counted as filling out 1 question takes 30 seconds).
  • Does the questionnaire contain a photo or video, if so, how many?
  • Do you need any of the optional services (personal consultation, printed analysis, foreign language analysis)?
The Customer has the right to use and publish all the results generated, but the entire database is managed by our company. WE DO NOT UNDERTAKE only data collection (database provision in SPSS or other form, without any analysis), thank you for your understanding!

Whichever option you choose, the questionnaire for online research - taking fully account of your needs - will be prepared for you at no extra cost!
